Il Novecento
The symphony orchestra Il Novecento, founded in 1991 by Robert Groslot, exists of top class musicians playing classical music on the basis of original scores. They easily switch from one register to another and dashingly succeed in taking a step from classic to pop and back. Il Novecento is an orchestra without a steady cast. For performances such as Night of the Proms, it amounts to 72 musicians. Other highlights beside the yearly Night of the Proms concerts were the accompaniment of Luciano Pavarotti in 1995 and 1997, of Andrea Bocelli in 1997 and of the Icelandic singer Björk in 2001 during their European tours.
Robert Groslot
Robert Groslot, conductor, composer and graphic artist, began his career as a pianist. He was a prize winner in the Alessandro Casagrande piano competition (Terni, 1974) and the Queen Elisabeth competition (Brussels, 1978), after which he toured Europe, Israel, Asia, Africa, New Zealand and the United States giving concerts. He has made many studio, radio and television recordings and around a hundred CDs. In 1991 he established the Il Novecento symphony orchestra, which he has conducted at Night of the Proms concerts, amongst others, in various European countries. In addition to many transcriptions and orchestrations of music from the past, Robert Groslot has also composed a series of works for various ensembles. He teaches piano and chamber music at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. As a graphic artist, he is a late developer: since the beginning of 2001 he has been producing tableaux using a new technique which he calls Computer Designed Painting, CDP and realized two films.
John Miles
John ‘Music’ Miles was on stage in 1985 when the first Night of the Proms took place in Antwerp and has been participating almost ever since as a singer and as the leader of the Electric Band. He started his professional music career on the age of 18. A record company showed an interest in the songs he composed and introduced him to Alan Parsons, who produced John’s first album ‘Rebel’ in 1976. The rock ballad ‘Music (Was My First Love)’ became a world hit and led to an American tour with Elton John. John Miles grew into an esteemed artist to whom also Jethro Tull, the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, Tina Turner and Joe Cocker appealed.
